During 2006/7 the National Computing Centre launched the IS Professionalism Programme – a programme which aimed to recast IS as the key enabler of business transformation. A number of objectives were set during a series of 10 workshops. The outputs of each workshop have been synthesised into a Best Practice Guide by Bob Jarvis, an IS/IT veteran with over 40 years experience.

This Best Practice Guide is the output of the eighth IS Professionalism workshop which explored building and continuously developing a modern IS function as on-shore and in-house sourcing becomes more favourable.

Although many organisations have outsourced much of their IT service delivery, there is a growing realisation that an organisation must be agile to be competitive. We examine building and continuously developing a modern IS function in terms of skills, competency and talent.

An integral part of this process is to understand what talent exists within your organisation and how to manage it. From whom do you and your team seek advice and guidance both internally and externally? How do you harness this capability to deliver real value to the business? What does best practice around building and developing capability encompass?
