How do you ensure that your IT department is aligned with business objectives and how do you prove to stakeholders that IT is fit for purpose and delivering value?

More and more organisations are answering these questions with the National Computing Centre’s IT Department Accreditation Scheme. The ITDA isn’t just an independent audit; it is also a business improvement programme, a tool to increase staff motivation and a certification scheme. You can read all about the ITDA here, but we thought you might like to hear what some of the accredited organisations have said about the programme:

“It is a very, very positive process – and the value for money of the ITDA is exceptional. I would recommend other companies to go through it, to see where you are, to benchmark and also to inform improvement wherever it is required.”
Graham Eland, IT Systems & Strategy (ITSS) department head, Leeds City College

“As well as accredit us, the ITDA also found the holes and the gaps that we had for us to then put right, which is really, really useful.”
Damian Parkinson, director of ICT, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service

“Holding the ITDA accreditation has benefitted the organisation greatly already, not least in the Group securing the recent Pendleton PFI bid. Proving that our ICT function is closely aligned with the current business objectives, as well as confirming that the use of current industry and sector best practice is being deployed, was essential to the Pendleton PFI selection criteria.”
Mo Ali, Group ICT Governance Manager, Together Housing Group

“After being in the IT industry for over 25 years you do start to doubt if your ways of running the department are still pertinent and it’s so reassuring to know we are doing a lot of things right and there are areas we can now improve on further."
Tracey Wilson, Group IT Director, Vp plc

“We can stand head and shoulders alongside our teaching colleagues now we have independent recognition that our business processes and performance are amongst the best. The ITDA is much more than a tick-box audit that is forgotten about when the consultant is gone, it makes you think about the function holistically, helps you prioritise, recognises contributions made and motivates the team to do better next time."
Arthur Spirling, IT Director, Imperial College London

“I’m delighted that we’ve achieved this accreditation. We aim to deliver a service that stands business scrutiny and this award confirms this unequivocally. Furthermore, this is recognition that the public sector can be at the forefront in making effective and efficient use of technology.”
Geoff Bradley, Director, North Wales Police

“Many of our members have IT functions similar to us in size, capability and environment, so I would certainly recommend the ITDA to them. The ITDA framework is a great way to build a service portfolio based on acknowledged best practice, and you only have to comply with the elements of the Standard that are pertinent to the nature of your function. And if you need a tool to boost staff morale in difficult times, this is definitely the way to achieve this.”
Rob Green, Head ICT, National Housing Federation (NHF)

“Overall I recommend others to go through the ITDA, it’s a fantastic endorsement of what your team does well, and a route map to improvement.”
Norman Crawford, Assistant Executive Director, ICT Services, Tameside MBC

“We felt we knew where improvement was required, but it is very useful to have that confirmed by an independent expert, so you know you are going down the right track.”
Noeline Best, UCAS

“The accreditation has made a big difference at Action for Blind People. It has publically reinforced the good things we do which has been great for our reputation and morale and it has provided us with a framework for continuous improvement that’s aligned to our needs and circumstance.”
Graeme Hollocks, Head of ICT, Action for Blind People

“In comparison with alternative approaches to independent assessment the ITDA represents real value for money. I’d certainly recommend other institutions in the sector to apply.”
Ian Griffiths, Director of Strategic Partnerships, IS, Nottingham Trent University

“The ITDA accreditation has been well received by our clients who know that we are under the watchful eye of the National Computing Centre to stay ahead of the game. Our sales team never fail to mention our accreditations including the ITDA and it makes a big, reassuring difference.”
Allan Jackson, IT Director, Liberata

“The ITDA is unique. We looked at independent audits from the management consultancies, but felt that the NCC approach covered all the areas of activity we wanted to review, engendered team building and motivation and wouldn’t tie us into buying follow-on services.”
Paul Day, Head of IS and Business Support, British Transport Police

“The ITDA is an invaluable way to get an independent benchmark of the department’s performance and potential. It has a great value to the business.”
Peter Kent, Head of ICT Services, JANET (UK)

“The ITDA has given us external validation that we are doing a great job and has helped us increase awareness of what IT do. We are a lot wiser from the process and have a clear route map for IT. Finally, all those little fractions of extra motivation across the team more than outweigh the cost of the ITDA.”
Damien Ghee, IT Director, Warburtons

“By helping us to objectively analyse our performance, the accreditation programme has already enabled us to deliver critical infrastructure programmes more effectively.”
Simon Earnshaw, IT Director, Dickinson Dees

“We wanted to make sure that our processes were ‘fit for purpose’, that our direction of travel was right and that we had the right attitude. We sought external validation of what we were doing and NCC’s ITDA fitted the bill perfectly.”
Gareth Baxendale, Head of IT, Benenden Healthcare Society

“For us this wasn’t a tick box exercise, we wanted to learn from the exercise and our assessor was very helpful in this respect, helping us identify what ‘good’ looked like in a number of areas.”
Colleen Long, Assistant Director and Head of IT Services, Northern Ireland Housing Executive

“and the ITDA provided us with an opportunity to both gain an independent understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, and to challenge the team to prove they could achieve the highest standards.”
Laura Vost, Business Systems Manager, Iceland Foods Ltd

“I am delighted that the Information Services staff are to be recognised for work done well, but we won’t be complacent. The Action Plan will help us focus our continuous improvement programme.”
Paul Featonby, IT Director, UCAS

“Being the first NHS organisation to obtain this accreditation shows our level of maturity provides reassurance to the Trust that the ICT department is amongst the best, providing value for money. In addition the accreditation provides assurance that is evidenced to prospective customers that their ICT will be in safe hands.”
Ricky MacKennon, Deputy Director of ICT, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
